Access Community Health Network has been awarded the "Partner Recognition" Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation's leading health care community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship, while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge.
The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector.
The Partner Recognition Award is given to health care facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements, have achieved some progress, and have at least a 10 percent recycling rate for their total waste stream.
Since 2013, ACCESS has implemented a co-mingled recycling program in which the network of 35 community health centers has recycled more than 432,320 lbs. or 216.16 tons of paper, cardboard, plastic, bulbs, and electronics.
Other environmental initiatives are measurable, as well. "ACCESS has chosen to purchase 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, such as wind, hydro and solar, which is in turn reducing our overall carbon footprint," said LaMar Davis, ACCESS Deputy Administrator, Facilities Planning Design and Construction.
ACCESS is also aggressively retro-commissioning its HVAC systems at three of its health centers and performing lighting retrofits at another eight locations. "During the past two years, the lighting retrofits have resulted in thousands of dollars of immediate savings on electrical costs," Davis added.
These are just some of the ways in which ACCESS is proactively protecting its patients by implementing clean, efficient solutions at its health centers.
"This award demonstrates our commitment to protecting the health of our patients, staff and community," said ACCESS CEO Donna Thompson."We look forward to working with Practice Greenhealth to continue navigating the path to sustainability for the future of health care."
The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards were presented earlier this month in Portland, Oregon, at the CleanMed Conference and Exhibition, the premier national environmental conference for leaders in health care sustainability.
