Stay Ahead of Flu and COVID-19 This Season

While healthy habits like handwashing and staying home when sick can help reduce the spread of illness, the most effective way to protect yourself from both the flu and COVID-19 is to get vaccinated.

Why Get Vaccinated?

Flu shots prevent millions of illnesses and flu-related doctors’ visits each year. During the 2019-2020 flu season alone, vaccines prevented an estimated 7 million flu illnesses. Similarly, COVID-19 vaccines have significantly reduced sever illness, hospitalizations, and deaths since their introduction. Even though the season has started, it’s not too late to get vaccinated. The flu typically peaks between December and February, and COVID-19 cases can surge during colder months. Getting vaccinated now can help protect you throughout the season.

Who Should Get the COVID-19 Shot?

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recommends flu and COVID-19 vaccines for:

  • All children ages 6 months through 23 months.
  • All children 2-17 years with at least one risk factor for severe disease including those living with others, those who have never been vaccinates against COVID-19, or those living in households with individuals who are high risk for severe COVID-19.
  • Children with weakened immune systems.
  • Children whose parents or guardians want them to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
  • All pregnant people and those who are breastfeeding or planning pregnancy.
  • All adults 18 years and older.

Even healthy individuals are at risk. Vaccination helps protect those around you, especially those who may be more vulnerable.
